My fairy tale romance began in high school. We started dating on February 11, 2007; Michael was a junior, and I was a senior. For our first Valentine’s Day, Michael completely charmed me with a romantic gesture. As he opened the car door for me (what a gentleman!), I noticed a rose in my seat; Michael then explained that his father had done this for his mother on one of their first dates. I knew then that he was my Prince Charming! Because I attended the University of Oklahoma and Michael was a Duke Blue Devil, we have happily and steadily maintained a long distance relationship. I can tell you that absence truly does make the heart grow fonder! Although we had been dating for almost five years and had discussed our future together, Michael completely surprised me and swept me off my feet with his romantic proposal. On August 13, 2011, shortly before Michael was returning to Duke for his senior year, he invited me to dinner at The Mantle, a restaurant in Bricktown, a fun area in downtown Oklahoma City. During our meal, Michael told me that he had planned a special surprise, which turned out to be a carriage ride. Being the fairy tale princess wannabe that I am, I couldn’t imagine a better surprise. But…WAIT…there’s more! Our journey ended in front of the historic Skirvin Hotel where we planned to have dessert. As I entered the lobby, I was a bit bewildered when I caught a glimpse of several family members unsuccessfully trying to hide behind various pillars. Before I had time to process this situation, Michael was already down on one knee asking for my hand in marriage. My answer was a resounding, “YES!!!” And–my ring rocks–pun intended! Now, on a hot and sunny evening in June, their fairy tale took on a new chapter with a gorgeous ceremony at the beautiful St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. As the bridal party made their way into the church all eyes were eager to see the beautiful bride as she walked down the aisle on the arm of her loving father, to marry her one true love, Michael. Callie’s delightful grandmother read the biblical readings and had a front row seat to witness the look of love on her granddaughter’s face whenever she looked at Michael. Everyone present was mesmerized by Callie’s aunt Lailan who filled the church with her beautiful voice. From the moment Callie walked down the aisle to the minute that they were pronounced husband and wife all guests were spellbound by their love.
